Ontario is the second largest province in Canada. Ontario’s capital Toronto, previously known as York, is home to a large financial district and the stock exchange. Ottawa, the capital of Canada, is also in Ontario. The province’s motto is “Loyal she began, loyal she remains.”

In 1629 Jesuit missionaries arrived and set up missions in Ontario. Ontario became a province in the year 1867.

Economy: The rivers of Ontario, particularly Niagara Falls, make it plentiful in hydroelectric energy. The province specializes in producing nickel, cobalt, salt, and magnesium. It is Canada’s leading producer of fruits and vegetables, and has a large pulp and paper industry. Other resources include zinc, oil, natural gas, copper, gold, silver and iron.

Population: Ontario is home to 12,068,301 people, based on the 2003 census. The largest city is Toronto, with 4.9 million people.

Weather: Chatham and Windsor experience 15-25 days a year above 30°C or 86°F. Toronto has hot summers. In the winter snow affects three primary areas known as the “snow belts”.
